Potassium potassium permanganate is a powerful antioxidant widely used in many fields from health care, production, aquaculture, livestock farming, water treatment, etc. However, how to use it, and what dosage is appropriate? Effective solutions must be controlled and recommended by experts.
What is permanganate?
Potassium permanganate, or KMnO4 is a common inorganic chemical used to treat drinking water. It is also considered a strong bactericidal chemical, used to eliminate bacteria in seafood ponds. Drinking water facilities often use potassium permanganate in the early stages of the disinfection process to reduce the amount of final-step chemicals such as chlorine and chloramine B.
The physical state of KMn04 is an odorless dry solid that looks like iridescent purple crystals. Because the color is quite characteristic, people often call it potassium permanganate, which dissolves in water and has a pink/purple color. Potassium permanganate can oxidize many substances, so it is famous as a strong oxidant, a substance that accepts or takes electrons from other substances.
How to use potassium permanganate:
In each different case, KMn04 will have different dosages:
- In the case of deodorizing and deodorizing water, a maximum of 20 mg/L should be used.
- In large-scale water treatment, potassium permanganate is often added at the beginning of the raw water source. Potassium permanganate is always added before filtration.
- To kill bacteria, use a dosage of 2-4 mg/L. The disinfectant dose must be based on the level of organic matter in the water.
- In case of virus destruction, a dose of 50 mg/L or higher should be used.
Storage and use:
- KMnO4 potassium permanganate is a strong oxidizer, so when storing, avoid direct light and high temperatures.
- Do not use potassium permanganate with other antiseptics such as formalin, iodine, H2O2, etc.
- Avoid adding too much potassium permanganate to the water before filtering, excess potassium permanganate will give the water a purple color.
Advantages of potassium permanganate:
- Removal of iron and manganese: If the amount of oxygen in drinking water is low, iron and manganese can be retained. Both of these metals cause dark color in drinking water and are harmful to pets. Potassium permanganate is often used to remove them, causing the metals to precipitate out of the solution.
- Odor control: Organic substances can cause unpleasant odors in drinking water. For example, you may smell bad water from a lake or well. KMn04 potassium permanganate can be used to neutralize these odors and also disinfect drinking water.
- Reduce the amount of chemicals in the final disinfection step: As you know, if the final disinfection step uses too much chlorine, it will create harmful compounds. Using potassium permanganate in the first step of water treatment will oxidize organic compounds that tend to be harmful. This is the way water plants treat water effectively, reducing the cost of using chlorine or chloramine.
Disadvantages of potassium permanganate:
Whether you grow aquatic animals or use potassium permanganate to treat water, you must mix it at the right concentration. Avoid using too much Potassium Permanganate as it can cause the following dangers:
- Skin irritation: At high levels, long-term exposure to potassium permanganate will cause skin erosion. Even causes skin burns. Always wear gloves, goggles, and a mask when approaching.
- Eye damage: The caustic nature of this compound is also dangerous for the eyes. Please wash your eyes quickly when coming into contact with KMn04.3. Fire and explosion hazard: This compound alone will not cause fire. But it enhances the flammability of other substances.

Application of potassium permanganate KMNO4 in aquatic products
Reduces organic matter in aquaculture and water treatment… Potassium potassium permanganate’s ability to kill bacteria, fungi, and algae comes from directly oxidizing cell membranes and, through that, destroying enzymes that play an important role. important in cell metabolism and thereby destroy microorganisms.
KMNO4 potassium permanganate also has the effect of detoxifying the fish-killer drugs rotenone and antimycin in ponds. The poison will become non-toxic after reacting with the drug at the appropriate dose.
KMNO4 potassium permanganate is effective in reducing the amount of organic matter in water thanks to its oxidizing properties thereby clarifying the water. It also has the effect of treating some diseases related to bacteria, parasites, and fungi on the gills of shrimp and fish.
A strong oxidizing chemical, used in disinfecting farms, poultry, and livestock
Other applications of KMNO4
- Used for disinfection and disinfection in the food industry, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and many other fields.
- In the textile chemical industry, KMnO4 is used to bleach textile fabrics
- Used to decolorize starch, fat, and gas absorbent
- Used in the metallurgical and environmental industries
- Resolves the toxic content in water and uses it in agriculture and aquaculture
- As an oxidant of vitamin C, Saccharin, etc.
